How the format directory works

Novus Convert supports 255 input formats across images, camera RAW, video, audio, documents, spreadsheets, archives, ebooks, fonts, vector, and 3D — every one processed entirely in your browser. This directory is the honest map of that capability: each format card is labeled so you can tell, before you upload anything, whether this release can genuinely convert it or only explain it.

A format marked as convertible has a real WebAssembly engine behind it and validates its own output before any download unlocks — a JPEG export is checked for a true JPEG signature, an MP4 for a playable stream, an EPUB for a valid package. Formats we cannot yet process end-to-end are published as reference guides instead of fake converters, so you never waste time on a route that would fail. Nothing is uploaded to a server: the file you pick is decoded and re-encoded in your device's own memory.

Use the directory to check compatibility, understand a format's strengths and trade-offs, and jump straight to a working conversion. From here you can reach any of the 2400 published conversion routes, or open the general batch converter to process a mixed set of files at once.

Format directory questions, answered

What does it mean when a format is 'available' versus 'reference only'?

An available format has a working, browser-local engine that produces and validates a real output for at least one target. A reference-only format has a guide explaining what it is and how it is normally converted, but this release does not process it in the browser — so no upload or download control is shown for it. This keeps the directory truthful rather than advertising conversions that would silently fail.

How many formats and conversions does Novus Convert support?

The library currently spans 255 browser-ready input formats and 2400 validated conversion routes. New routes are added as their engines are implemented and pass output validation, and the directory updates automatically from the same capability manifest the converter itself uses.

Are my files uploaded when I use a converter from this directory?

No. Every available conversion runs locally in your browser using WebAssembly. Your file's contents, name, and metadata are never sent to a server — there is no upload endpoint for file processing. That is why speed depends on your device rather than your connection, and why there is no file-size pricing tier.

How do I find the right converter for my file?

Locate your file's format in the directory, open its page to confirm it is convertible, and choose an output. If you have several files, open the batch converter, drop them all in, and pick an output for each row. Each format page also lists related routes so you can pivot to a nearby conversion in one click.

Can I request a format or conversion that isn't available yet?

Yes. Reference-only formats in the directory are effectively the current wish list. Email the team with your use case and the specific input and output you need, and it is weighed by everyday usefulness and whether it can be processed privately in the browser.
