A .nef file is a Nikon Electronic Format RAW photograph containing the camera sensor's readout before Nikon's Picture Control rendering is applied. Every Nikon digital body from the original D1 to the current Z series writes .nef, though the internal encoding has evolved considerably across that span.

Where NEF comes from

Nikon established NEF with the D1 in 1999, one of the first integrated professional DSLRs, and has kept the extension while revising the internals for each sensor generation. A notable controversy came in 2005 when the D2X encrypted its white-balance MakerNote data, provoking a standoff with third-party developers; the Z9 later added TicoRAW-based High Efficiency modes.

How NEF works

  • TIFF-derived structure with the raw Bayer mosaic in a sub-IFD plus embedded JPEG previews
  • Sensor data is 12- or 14-bit, selectable on many bodies, stored uncompressed, losslessly compressed, or 'visually lossless' compressed
  • Nikon's lossless compression uses Huffman coding tuned per bit depth
  • Recent Z-series bodies add High Efficiency (HE/HE*) modes built on intoPIX TicoRAW, shrinking files up to ~70%
  • MakerNotes record lens ID, focus points, shooting menu state, and Picture Control parameters

When to use NEF

  • Full-latitude development of photos from any Nikon DSLR or Z mirrorless body
  • Studio and landscape work exploiting 14-bit depth for shadow recovery
  • Batch reprocessing of decades-spanning Nikon archives under one workflow

Strengths and limitations

Strengths

  • Preserves complete sensor data with white balance merely annotated, not applied
  • 14-bit lossless option captures the sensor's full tonal range
  • Twenty-five years of continuous vendor and third-party support

Limitations

  • Per-generation encoding changes mean brand-new cameras outpace older software
  • The newest HE/HE* compressed variants need very recent decoders
  • Large files and mandatory development, as with all RAW formats

Compatibility

Nikon's own NX Studio plus Lightroom, Capture One, darktable, and RawTherapee cover NEF thoroughly, and both Windows and macOS ship raw codecs that preview mainstream variants. New camera models require codec updates before support lands, and browser-side decoding depends on LibRaw compiled to WebAssembly rather than any native capability.

Comprehensive EXIF plus Nikon MakerNotes (lens, AF, vibration-reduction state) are embedded, with XMP written either embedded or as sidecars by editing software.
