ORF converter

An .orf file is an Olympus RAW Format photograph from Olympus and successor OM System cameras, storing the Four Thirds sensor's output before in-camera processing. The extension has covered every Olympus digital generation from early E-system DSLRs through today's OM-1 mirrorless bodies.

Where ORF comes from

Olympus adopted ORF in the early 2000s, with the E-1 — the first Four Thirds DSLR, launched in 2003 — cementing it in the professional line. When Olympus sold its imaging division in 2020, the resulting OM Digital Solutions kept both the cameras and the format, so new OM System bodies still write .orf files.

How ORF works

  • TIFF-like structure with deliberate header deviations (magic bytes IIRO/IIRS rather than standard TIFF) that trip naive parsers
  • 12-bit Bayer sensor data from Four Thirds and Micro Four Thirds sensors, with proprietary lossless packing
  • High Res Shot modes composite 8 or 16 sensor-shifted exposures into 50-80 MP files, sometimes with an .ori companion for the base frame
  • MakerNotes include in-body stabilization state, art filter settings, and lens correction parameters

When to use ORF

  • Developing photos from Olympus and OM System Micro Four Thirds cameras
  • Handheld high-resolution composites for landscape and product work
  • Field photography where the compact MFT system is chosen for weight

Strengths and limitations

Strengths

  • Full raw latitude from a system prized for stabilization and portability
  • High Res Shot ORFs deliver medium-format-class resolution from a small body
  • Consistent extension across two decades of bodies simplifies archives

Limitations

  • The nonstandard TIFF header confuses generic tools that assume spec compliance
  • Smaller Four Thirds sensors give less shadow latitude than full-frame rivals' files
  • 12-bit depth trails the 14-bit norms of larger-sensor competitors

Compatibility

OM Workspace, Lightroom, Capture One, DxO, and the open-source raw engines all read ORF, including high-resolution composite variants in current releases. Windows and macOS thumbnail common ORFs through their raw codec packs, browsers require LibRaw-based WebAssembly decoding, and brand-new bodies need the usual codec catch-up period.

EXIF is complete and Olympus MakerNotes are unusually detailed about stabilization, focus bracketing, and computational modes; XMP normally lives in sidecars.
