Where AZW3 comes from

Amazon announced Kindle Format 8 in October 2011 alongside the Kindle Fire tablet. It became the standard store and sideloading format for the following decade, only yielding ground as Amazon shifted internal delivery to the newer KFX generation.

How AZW3 works

  • Documents are authored in a large subset of HTML5 and CSS3, including floats, tables, and @font-face embedding.
  • Retains the PalmDB record container, so a KF8 file is parsed with the same machinery as MOBI.
  • Many published files are dual-format, bundling both a MOBI and a KF8 rendition for backward compatibility.
  • Supports fixed-layout books with region magnification, used heavily for comics and children's titles.

When to use AZW3

  • Sideloading books to Kindle e-readers over USB with full formatting intact
  • Converting EPUB titles into their best-fidelity Kindle equivalent
  • Fixed-layout comics and children's books on Fire tablets

Strengths and limitations

Strengths

  • Dramatically better typography than MOBI: embedded fonts, floats, tables, drop caps
  • Renders natively on more than a decade of Kindle hardware
  • Well supported by Calibre for both reading and writing

Limitations

  • Locked to the Amazon ecosystem; no other vendor's hardware reads it
  • Purchased copies ship with DRM, and encrypted files cannot be converted to anything
  • Amazon's newer KFX format has displaced it for store delivery

Compatibility

All Kindles from the fourth generation onward render .azw3, and Calibre both reads and writes it, making it the standard target when preparing books for Kindle over USB. Nothing outside the Amazon ecosystem supports it natively, so Kobo, Apple Books, and Android readers need a conversion first.
