RW2 converter

An .rw2 file is a Panasonic Lumix RAW photograph, storing sensor data along with the lens-correction parameters that Micro Four Thirds imaging depends on. A distinctive trait of .rw2 is that its embedded distortion-correction metadata is essentially mandatory: raw converters must apply it to render geometrically correct images from many Lumix lenses.

Where RW2 comes from

Panasonic moved to the RW2 extension around 2008, superseding the short-lived .raw extension of its earliest Lumix models. The format spans the company's bridge cameras, the Micro Four Thirds system it co-founded with Olympus in 2008, and the full-frame S series launched in 2019.

How RW2 works

  • TIFF-based container with Panasonic-specific tag numbering and the raw mosaic at 12 or 14 bits
  • Embedded lens correction (distortion, vignetting, chromatic aberration) coefficients that decoders are expected to honor
  • Newer bodies offer lossless compression; older ones store unpacked or simply packed sensor data
  • Includes a full-resolution embedded JPEG rendered with the camera's Photo Style settings

When to use RW2

  • Raw workflows for Lumix GH-series video-hybrid and S-series full-frame cameras
  • Travel and street photography from compact LX/TZ enthusiast models
  • Extracting maximum detail from sensors paired with software-corrected lenses

Strengths and limitations

Strengths

  • Complete sensor latitude with camera-accurate lens corrections built in
  • Consistent format across compacts, MFT, and full-frame Lumix lines
  • 14-bit capture on recent S-series bodies

Limitations

  • Renderers that ignore the correction metadata produce visibly distorted output from certain lenses
  • Panasonic-specific tags require up-to-date decoders for each new body
  • The usual RAW costs: big files, mandatory development step

Compatibility

Lightroom, Capture One, DxO, darktable, and RawTherapee all handle RW2 and correctly apply its embedded lens profiles, as do Windows and macOS preview codecs for established models. No browser opens it natively, so client-side conversion again leans on LibRaw compiled to WebAssembly.

EXIF plus Panasonic MakerNotes carry shooting parameters and the crucial lens-correction tables; XMP is sidecar-based in most editing workflows.
