PEF converter

A .pef file is a Pentax Electronic File, the proprietary RAW format of Pentax DSLRs now produced under Ricoh Imaging. Pentax is unusual in offering photographers an in-camera choice between .pef and Adobe's open DNG, making it one of the few brands to treat its native RAW as optional.

Where PEF comes from

PEF appeared with Pentax's early DSLRs, the 2003 *ist D being the first to write it, and continued through the K-series line after Ricoh acquired Pentax's camera business in 2011. From the K10D (2006) onward most bodies added native DNG output beside PEF, a dual-format policy Pentax maintains to this day.

When to use PEF

  • Raw development from Pentax K-mount DSLRs and the 645 medium-format line
  • Astrophotography workflows using Pentax's astrotracer sensor-shift tracking
  • Archives that deliberately pair PEF originals with DNG conversions

Strengths and limitations

Strengths

  • Lossless 14-bit capture on modern bodies with efficient compression
  • The in-camera DNG alternative provides a built-in archival escape hatch
  • Stable, well-understood format after two decades of third-party support

Limitations

  • Smaller ecosystem than Canon/Nikon/Sony formats, so niche tools sometimes lag
  • Pentax's modest market share raises long-term orphan-format risk relative to DNG
  • Standard RAW burdens of file size and required processing apply

Compatibility

All the major raw processors — Lightroom, Capture One, DxO, darktable, RawTherapee — read PEF, and OS raw codec packs on Windows and macOS preview files from established bodies. Photographers wanting maximum future-proofing can simply switch the camera to DNG; in browsers, PEF decoding is possible only through WebAssembly builds of LibRaw.
