Where DTS comes from

DTS debuted in cinemas in 1993 with Jurassic Park, using CD-ROMs synchronized to the film print rather than an optical soundtrack. The consumer Coherent Acoustics codec became an optional DVD format in 1997 and spawned extensions like the lossless DTS-HD Master Audio used on Blu-ray.

  • No browser and few phones license the decoder, a classic cause of silent video playback
  • Licensing fees keep it out of many smart-TV apps

Compatibility

AV receivers and Blu-ray players handle DTS routinely, while browsers, iPhones, and many smart-TV apps omit the decoder to avoid licensing costs. When a video plays with no sound, a DTS track is a prime suspect, and converting it to AAC or AC-3 resolves the issue.
