CDR format guide

A .cdr file is a CorelDRAW drawing, the native format of Corel's long-running vector design suite. It stores multi-page vector documents with the full editing state — curves, text, fills, and effects — in a proprietary binary structure that has changed with nearly every CorelDRAW release.

Where CDR comes from

Corel launched CorelDRAW in 1989 and the format has evolved in lockstep ever since, adopting a RIFF-based container in later versions and ZIP packaging more recently. Corel has never published a specification; open-source support exists because community developers reverse-engineered the format into the libcdr library.

How CDR works

  • Modern files use a RIFF chunk structure (newer builds wrap content in ZIP), with version signatures that gate which releases can open them.
  • Supports multi-page documents, spot colors, and print-oriented controls such as overprint settings.
  • Backward compatibility runs one way: newer CorelDRAW opens old files, but older versions refuse files saved by newer ones.
  • libcdr provides read-only import for outside tools; no third-party writer exists.

When to use CDR

  • Sign-making and vinyl-cutting shops, where CorelDRAW is deeply entrenched
  • Print design in studios standardized on the Corel suite
  • Laser engraving workflows driven from CorelDRAW

Strengths and limitations

Strengths

  • Full-featured professional vector format
  • Strong footing in the signage and engraving industries
  • Multi-page document support

Limitations

  • Proprietary and undocumented, so fidelity outside CorelDRAW is hit-or-miss
  • Version lock-in complicates collaboration across CorelDRAW releases
  • Essentially no web or mobile support

Compatibility

CorelDRAW on Windows and macOS is the authoritative reader and the only writer. Inkscape and LibreOffice Draw import many .cdr versions through libcdr with variable accuracy, while Adobe Illustrator dropped its importer years ago — exporting to EPS, PDF, or SVG from CorelDRAW remains the reliable exchange route.

Document properties such as title, author, and keywords are stored in the file and editable from CorelDRAW's document info dialog.
