MMF converter

An .mmf file is a Yamaha SMAF (Synthetic music Mobile Application Format) file, the ringtone format of early-2000s mobile phones. Rather than a recording, an .mmf usually contains sequenced music that a phone's Yamaha synthesizer chip performed live, sometimes blended with short PCM samples.

Where MMF comes from

Yamaha developed SMAF around the turn of the millennium to feed its MA-series sound chips, which shipped inside phones from Samsung, Sharp, and many other manufacturers across Asia and Europe. Polyphonic ringtone culture peaked mid-decade, and once phones gained full MP3 playback, SMAF vanished almost overnight.

How MMF works

  • A chunk-based format conceptually close to MIDI, with score tracks driving FM and wavetable synthesis
  • Chip generations set the polyphony: 16 voices on MA-2, 40 on MA-3, and 64 on MA-5
  • Short ADPCM samples can be embedded for vocal snippets and effects
  • Complete ringtones often weigh just a few kilobytes
  • What listeners heard depended on the handset's synth chip, not only on the file

When to use MMF

  • Preserving ringtone collections from early-2000s handsets
  • Rendering old sequences to MP3 or M4R through synth-aware tools
  • Extracting embedded PCM snippets from commercial ringtones

Strengths and limitations

Strengths

  • Minuscule file sizes from sequenced rather than sampled audio
  • Captures a distinctive era of mobile sound design
  • Emulators and niche tools can still render it

Limitations

  • No current phone, browser, or OS plays it at all
  • Faithful conversion is hard because the output depended on specific Yamaha hardware
  • Tooling is scarce and largely abandoned

Compatibility

No modern platform plays .mmf natively; support died with the feature phone. Conversion requires niche tools that render the sequence data to PCM, after which any contemporary format works.
