OGV converter

An .ogv file is video packed in the Ogg container, typically compressed with the Theora codec and paired with Vorbis audio. The .ogv extension separated video from Ogg audio when Xiph.Org split its file naming, and it appears mostly in open-source projects and Wikipedia's media archives.

Where OGV comes from

Xiph.Org built Theora on the VP3 codec that On2 Technologies open-sourced, releasing the stable 1.0 encoder in 2008. For a brief window around Firefox 3.5's 2009 release, Ogg Theora was the leading candidate for HTML5 video before WebM superseded it in 2010.

How OGV works

  • Uses Ogg's page-and-packet framing, which supports live streaming and survives truncation gracefully
  • Theora video descends from On2's VP3 and trails H.264 significantly in compression efficiency
  • Audio is Vorbis or occasionally FLAC, keeping the entire stack patent-free
  • An optional Skeleton stream describes track structure to aid seeking

When to use OGV

  • Playing media downloaded from Wikimedia Commons
  • Maintaining pipelines that must remain entirely free software
  • Converting legacy open-media archives to WebM or MP4

Strengths and limitations

Strengths

  • Royalty-free from container to codec with no patent baggage
  • Streams and seeks well despite its age
  • Still decodable by Firefox and desktop players

Limitations

  • Theora's compression is a full generation behind even VP8
  • Safari never supported it at any point
  • Encoder development effectively stopped years ago

Compatibility

Firefox retains Theora playback and Chromium-based browsers have begun deprecating theirs, while Safari and mobile platforms never supported .ogv at all. VLC and ffmpeg decode it everywhere, making conversion to WebM or MP4 straightforward.

Vorbis comments in the audio stream carry artist and title tags, and the Ogg Skeleton track can describe the streams themselves.
