Where OGG comes from

Xiph.Org started Vorbis after Fraunhofer's 1998 announcement that MP3 encoders would owe license fees, shipping public beta encoders in 2000 and the 1.0 release in 2002. Spotify streamed in Vorbis for most of its history, and countless game engines adopted it to sidestep royalties.

How OGG works

  • Vorbis is an MDCT-based lossy codec tuned through a quality scale (-q) rather than fixed bitrates
  • Practical encodes span roughly 45 to 500 kbps, with -q5 (~160 kbps) a common sweet spot
  • Matches or beats MP3 at mid bitrates, though Opus has since overtaken both
  • Ogg framing supports live streaming and chained files, the trick behind endless net-radio streams
  • Surround channel layouts up to 7.1 are defined in the mapping spec

When to use OGG

  • Shipping game audio assets without codec royalties
  • Distributing sounds in Linux distributions and open-source projects
  • Running internet radio stations on Icecast
  • Re-encoding audio for royalty-free redistribution

Limitations

  • Apple's Music app and iOS offer no native playback
  • Opus outperforms it inside the very same container
  • Some car head units skip .ogg files silently

Compatibility

Chrome, Firefox, and Edge have decoded Ogg Vorbis for many years, and Android plays it natively, while Safari and iOS remained the notable holdouts until only recently. Dedicated players such as VLC and foobar2000 cover the desktop everywhere.
