A .potx file is a PowerPoint template: a presentation package marked as a starting point, carrying the slide masters, layouts, theme, and fonts that new decks should inherit. Many templates also ship example slides showing the design in use.

Where POTX comes from

PowerPoint templates began as .pot files and became .potx with the OOXML transition in PowerPoint 2007, gaining the macro-free guarantee that .pptx has. Microsoft ships a library of .potx files with Office itself, and the design-template market built around the format is substantial.

How POTX works

  • Package layout matches .pptx exactly: presentation, slides, slideLayouts, slideMasters, theme, and media parts in a ZIP.
  • Slide masters and layouts are the substance of the file; example slides in ppt/slides are optional.
  • Only the declared content type distinguishes it from a presentation, which is why one reader handles both.
  • Cannot contain a VBA project — a template needing macros must be .potm.
  • A theme-only template with no ppt/slides parts has no extractable text, and converting one reports that rather than inventing content.

When to use POTX

  • Brand-compliant deck starting points for a whole organization.
  • Commercial design templates distributed to presenters.
  • Conference or partner templates that fix logo, colour, and font placement.
  • Recovering the example-slide copy from a template you inherited.

Strengths and limitations

Strengths

  • Guaranteed macro-free, so it moves through mail filters that stop .potm.
  • Standard OOXML package readable by any ZIP and XML tooling.
  • Separates design from content so branding can be updated centrally.

Limitations

  • A template with only masters and layouts yields nothing on a text conversion, by definition.
  • Theme fidelity drifts in Keynote, Impress, and Google Slides.
  • Large embedded imagery makes design templates heavy to distribute.

Compatibility

PowerPoint 2007 onward on Windows and macOS uses .potx natively; LibreOffice Impress, Keynote, and Google Slides all import it with varying theme fidelity. Microsoft Office ships several .potx templates, which is what the reader in this project was checked against.

Keeps the standard docProps core and app parts, usually naming the template designer rather than any later presenter.
