Rasterizing .svg artwork to .ppm converts infinitely scalable geometry into fixed pixels at a chosen size. An .svg file is a Scalable Vector Graphics document: an XML text file describing shapes, paths, text, and gradients mathematically rather than as pixels. Because the geometry is resolution-independent, one .svg renders razor-sharp at any size, from a 16-pixel favicon to a billboard.

A .ppm file is a Portable Pixmap: a full-colour image storing three samples — red, green and blue — per pixel, with the maximum channel value declared in the header. It is the top rung of the Netpbm ladder and the most commonly encountered of the three. For this route the practical draw is full colour with no compression artefacts and no codec to implement and supports 16 bits per channel — balanced against completely uncompressed — typically several times the size of an equivalent PNG, which is worth knowing before you commit a large batch.

Why convert SVG to PPM?

Will converting SVG to PPM lose quality?

The conversion is exact at the resolution you rasterize to — vectors have no pixels until they are drawn. Pick dimensions that match the largest size you will display, because unlike .svg, a .ppm raster cannot be enlarged cleanly afterwards.

Is it private to convert SVG files here?

Yes — the .svg file is processed inside your browser tab and never uploaded. Your browser's own rendering engine rasterizes the vector artwork onto a canvas before encoding the target format. Close the tab and the file is gone from memory.

Where will the PPM file work?

In .svg, metadata travels as XML: <title> and <desc> elements aid accessibility, a <metadata> element can hold RDF or XMP, and Creative Commons licensing blocks are common in Inkscape output; EXIF does not apply. Re-encoding through the browser pipeline does not carry embedded metadata into the output, which doubles as a privacy scrub — check the exported file if you specifically need tags preserved.

Can I convert PPM back to SVG?

Yes — the reverse route exists as a separate tool. Bear in mind that round-tripping .svg → .ppm → .svg is not a perfect undo when any lossy step is involved; keep your original if fidelity matters.
