A .rss file is an RSS feed: an XML document listing a channel's recent items, each with a title, link, description and publication date, so that a reader can poll one URL instead of visiting a site. It is the format that made subscribing to a website a thing you could do.

An .atom file is an Atom feed: the IETF-standardised syndication format, structured as a feed element containing entries, each with a globally unique id, a title, a timestamp and either content or a link to it. It was designed to fix the ambiguities RSS had frozen in place. For this route the practical draw is a real IETF standard with the ambiguities resolved rather than frozen in and unambiguous dates and explicit content typing — balanced against less widely supported than RSS despite being the better specification, which is worth knowing before you commit a large batch.

Why convert RSS to ATOM?

The practical trigger for this conversion is usually a mismatch: with .rss, rFC 822 dates are an ongoing source of quiet parsing failures. Re-encoding through the browser pipeline does not carry embedded metadata into the output, which doubles as a privacy scrub — check the exported file if you specifically need tags preserved.

Can I convert ATOM back to RSS?

Yes — the reverse route exists as a separate tool. Bear in mind that round-tripping .rss → .atom → .rss is not a perfect undo when any lossy step is involved; keep your original if fidelity matters.
